Why Donate Glasses?

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that of the 153 million people worldwide who have poor vision, 138 million or 90% live in African, Asian or Latin American countries. This is because in many of these countries people cannot afford the cost of a simple pair of eyeglasses.

Sadly, more than 4 million pairs of eyeglasses are discarded every year in the U.S.A. Clear vision is crucial for learning and academic success. By providing eyeglasses to students in developing countries, we can help them overcome vision-related barriers to education.

There are many benefits for students who volunteer at a food pantry. It exposes kids to individuals and families who are struggling with food insecurity. This experience helps them develop empathy and compassion for others, as they witness firsthand the challenges faced by those in need. It also builds teamwork and communication skills. Kids learn how to collaborate with others, communicate effectively, and work towards a common goal. These skills are valuable in all aspects of life, including school, extracurricular activities, and future careers.

Hawa from Liberia came to the US as an exchange student in 2015-16. Deb Bowen was her Local Coordinator. She was given a kit to take home and use. In February of 2019, she received 100 kits to share with the women and girls of her remote village.

Providing hygiene kits can also help raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene, breaking down taboos and reducing the stigma associated with menstruation. This creates a more open and supportive environment for women and girls.

These students attend a school for the deaf. Stigma surrounding kids with disabilities in developing countries is a significant issue that affects their well-being and access to opportunities.

This can result in social isolation for children with disabilities, as they may be excluded from community activities, events, and friendships. This isolation can have negative impacts on their mental health and overall well-being.

By addressing these issues and promoting inclusivity, we can create a more equitable and supportive environment for these children allowing them to reach their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.
